How to Line a Food Waste Caddy Without Plastic
Share
Food waste caddies are a simple way to keep food scraps out of landfill. But if you line your caddy with an ordinary plastic bag, you're adding plastic back into the process. The good news is that lining your caddy without plastic is easy.
Why not use plastic bags?
Conventional plastic bags don't break down in composting conditions. If they end up mixed in with food waste, they can contaminate it, and plastic can persist in landfill for decades. A certified compostable liner is designed to break down alongside the food scraps inside it.
Choose the right liner
Look for liners that are certified compostable, not just labelled "biodegradable". Our 10L compostable bin liners are made for food waste caddies and small kitchen bins, and they're strong enough for a full week of food scraps. They're made from PBAT, corn starch and PLA, and hold genuine third-party certification:
- TÜV Austria OK compost (home and industrial)
- DIN Certco (EN 13432 and ASTM D6400)
- Australian AS 5810 (home) and AS 4736 (industrial)

How to line your caddy, step by step
- Open the roll and pull out a liner.
- Place it inside your food waste caddy, folding the top edge over the rim to hold it in place.
- Fill it with food scraps such as vegetable peelings, coffee grounds and eggshells.
- When it's full, lift it out and tie the top.
- Place it in your kerbside food waste collection or home compost, following your local council's guidance.
Tips for a cleaner caddy
- Empty your caddy regularly, especially in warm weather.
- Drain off any liquid before adding scraps.
- Rinse your caddy out between liners from time to time.
- Store spare liners in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, in their original packaging until use.
Can I put the liner in my home compost?
Yes. Our 10L liners are certified for both home and industrial composting. How quickly they break down depends on the composting conditions available to you. If you use a council food waste collection, check your council's guidance on which liners they accept.
The bottom line
Swapping plastic bags for certified compostable liners is one of the easiest eco swaps you can make. Your food waste stays plastic-free from the caddy to the compost.
