One Drawer, Total Refresh, A Before And After

This is the drawer makeover post. One drawer, cleared out completely, rebuilt with four things and nothing else. Here's exactly what went in.

Before

The usual mess. Three part used boxes of different bag brands, a cling film roll with no end left to find, a single loose zip loc bag, and something unidentifiable at the back.

What went back in

  • 10 Litre caddy bags for food waste, certified compostable, EN13432, TUV Austria OK compost home and industrial
  • 2 Litre and 4 Litre freezer bags for food storage, food, fridge and freezer safe
  • 0.5 Litre zip loc bags for snacks and lunches, certified compostable for industrial composting
  • Compostable cling film for wrapping and covering, certified compostable, food, fridge and freezer safe

Why four things is enough

Every job in that drawer falls into one of four categories. Food waste, food storage, small bags, wrapping. Once you sort by job instead of by whatever was on offer at the shop, the drawer stops refilling with clutter.

After

Four clear stacks, each one easy to grab without digging. The kind of drawer you actually want to open.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I redo this kind of drawer sort?

Once it's sorted properly by job rather than brand, most people find it stays tidy on its own, since there's an obvious place for everything to go back to.

What if I don't use all four bag types?

Skip whichever you don't need. The point is sorting by job, not owning every product, so a two or three item version works just as well.

Where should compostable cling film live in the drawer?

Anywhere it's easy to grab one handed, since you'll usually be holding food in the other hand. A shallow front section of the drawer works well.
