Which Bin Bag Goes Where? A Clear Guide - EcoGreenLiving

Which Bin Bag Goes Where? A Clear Guide

Two ranges, two completely different jobs. Getting them mixed up is the single most common mistake we hear about, so here's the straightforward version.

Recycled range, general waste

Our 50 Litre and 90 Litre drawstring bags are made from 100 percent post consumer recycled LDPE plastic, certified to the Global Recycled Standard and Blue Angel, the German eco label. These are for general household rubbish. They are not compostable and shouldn't go in food or garden waste.

Compostable range, food and garden waste

Our 10 Litre, 30 Litre, 60 Litre and 140 Litre bags are certified compostable to EN13432, with the TUV Austria OK compost mark for both home and industrial composting. These are for food waste caddies and garden waste, not general rubbish.

Why mixing them up matters

Putting a recycled plastic bag in a food waste collection can contaminate the whole batch at the processing stage. Putting a compostable bag in general waste just means it behaves like any other bag in landfill, and you lose the benefit you paid for. Right bag, right bin, every time.

A simple rule to remember

Food scraps or garden waste, reach for the compostable range. Everything else, reach for the recycled range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the recycled bin bags eco friendly even though they're not compostable?

Yes, in a different way. They're made from 100 percent post consumer recycled plastic rather than new plastic, and certified to the Global Recycled Standard and Blue Angel label.

Can compostable bags go in a normal general waste bin?

They can, but you lose the benefit of composting. They're certified for home and industrial composting, or council food and garden waste collections, that's where they perform best.

What's Blue Angel certification?

Blue Angel is a German eco label that certifies products against independently set environmental standards. Our recycled drawstring bags carry this certification.

Shop the recycled range: 50L and 90L bags. Shop the compostable range: 10L, 30L, 60L and 140L bags.
